Greetings,
It’s been nearly a month since my last post, much to my own frustration, as my day job has recently also consumed my nights.  Unfortunately that has equated to less time for creative endeavors, though I aim to get back into the swing of writing sooner rather than later.  I thank you for your patience with me and I promise to continue to churn out material that I hope you find entertaining and perhaps even a bit inspiring.

This brings me back to “The Grid”.  As I work to develop an integrated tapestry of stories woven together by the actions of interesting characters, I decided that I need to construct a central element that is currently missing.  I need a main antagonist.  This character needs to be directly involved with Global Grids either as a CEO or a VP in charge of environmental affairs.

Like any good antagonist, they will need to challenge the other characters equally.  Yet I believe in creating antagonists who are truly multi-dimensional.  Similar to George R. R. Martin’s “A Game of Thrones”, all of my characters, especially in “The Grid”, need to have both good and bad qualities.  In this way the reader will, not only connect with them, but project their own flaws onto the characters and see some of themselves in them.  This antagonist needs to be one of those characters.  So they need to have a good side too.   To make it really interesting, that good side needs to be in direct conflict with the needs of the other characters.

Though the novella may begin to paint Global Grids as a power hungry global superpower, I need to establish the paradox that we all use energy and, more often than not, never really delve into where it comes from.  Dare I say that many of us don’t even care?  As long as we get it, we’re fine turning a blind eye to it.  I want this novella to inspire people to learn more about where they get things from and the ramifications their actions cause.  Else, how can we preach change?  It seems rather hypocritical to me.

This novella won’t be an advocate for any cause other than fostering a healthy awareness.  The topic of energy spawns thousands of heated debates, all of which have some sort of environmental impact.  I just think most of us agree that we need to get the most energy with the least impact possible.  I don’t know what the source is but I think it’s worth researching.  I aim to do that and present many of those sources in this novella as a way to plant a seed into the reader’s mind that, hopefully, will grow into a curiosity they then learn more about on their own.

So this antagonist needs to embody the necessary evil that energy production is.  I think a good place to start to think about this character is to create a crisis for them at the onset.  Being in crisis-mode can tell you a lot about a person.  So this character is in a crisis.  Why?  Partly due to the loss of their climatology research team that Lauren from “The Brink” was a part of.  Global Grids has been getting a lot of bad press lately, from reporters like Kevin Deerfield from “Twenty-Seventh Time” and this antagonist seeks out an advertising agency to help clean up their brand.  This agency will just so happen to be the one that Chloé works for in “Longing on Las Olas”.

Come back to see how this antagonist in crisis will impact the lives of the other characters you’ve already met.

Cheers!

Greetings,

It’s time now to begin to figure out just how all of these short stories will fit together in one larger overarching novella  To do so, I need to layout how each of the characters might come into contact with each other, given their professions, where they live and what’s going on in their lives.  Let’s begin with what’s currently identifiable from reading these six stories:

Olivia:  In “Twenty-Seventh Time”, I introduced eleven year old Olivia whose OCD has her contemplating suicide in Alexandria, VA.  She is talked out of it by her friend Ellie, from on online support group who is dying of cancer in New Brunswick, NJ.

Ellie:  Aside from talking Olivia out of suicide in “Twenty-Seventh Time”, Ellie is referred to in “Longing on Las Olas” by her nurse, Danté, after she passed away.  Dantégrief stricken, went to Florida to clear his head and honor Ellie’s memory as he blames himself for not being able to save her.

Sung:  In “FLUX”, Sung , in Washington, DC, discovered she couldn’t have children and worries about letting down her abusive father.  While a stranger at a bus stop, Sydney, helps her deal with her grief, she comes across an advertisement to help abused children and recognizes it as her true calling in life.  In “Twenty-Seventh Time”, Sung has an argument with her father just before meeting with her new mentee, Olivia.  Sung begins the long process of helping Olivia deal with her own demons through yoga and open communication.

Bernie:  Bernice, known to her friends as Bernie, works for a water treatment facility in “Shadow Among Us”.  In that story, Bernie encounters a young Amish girl, Hannah, and gives her a ride into New Hope, PA.  Later, in “Twenty-Seventh Time”, Bernie has gone out of her way to be a source of information for Olivia’s Uncle Kevin.  Kevin Deerfield is a magazine reporter who has a reputation for going after stories with environmental impact and the inside info Bernie has about the dangers of fracking sludge involving a global energy company, Global Grids, gets him hot on their trail.

Lauren:  As a climatologist for an energy company in “The Brink”, Lauren loses her entire expedition team, which Olivia’s Uncle Kevin is said to have written an article about in “Twenty-Seventh Time” and traces to Global Grids.

Rashida:  In “The Horn of Freedom”, Rashida is the daughter of a Muslim police Captain in Dearborn, MI.  Her father is killed by a racial extremist after being elected mayor.  In “Twenty-Seventh Time”, it is revealed that Rashida and Olivia are friends as Olivia was originally from Michigan but moved down to Virginia to live with her Uncle Kevin when her father was killed and her mother had become abusive.

So, as you can see from the characters I’ve outlined above, I’d already established connections between these stories and began constructing the antagonistic Global Grids as a seed for further exploration.  Stay tuned for my next blog post when I’ll take a deeper dive and illustrate how I aim to further connect these stories and set up the framework for “The Grid” itself.

Cheers!

Greetings Fans,

Slowly and methodically I begin the task of constructing the framework for the world of my newest project “The Grid”.  This, what I’m presuming will be a novella, will encompass and elaborate on six short stories that I previously wrote this spring.  Those six are: “FLUX”, “The Brink”, “The Horn of Freedom”, “Longing on Las Olas”, “Shadow Among Us” and finally “Twenty-Seventh Time”.  Each of these stories deliberately focuses on diversity, thought provoking underlying questions, uncomfortable situations and dialogue as well as less than happy endings.  Why?  To make my readers think and realize that on some level, we can all relate to each other.

Before I can truly begin to construct the framework for this novella, I’ll have to erect the scaffolding.  That requires some analysis of each of these short stories, their principle characters, the supporting characters and which of those would have relevant, near earth shattering encounters, should they meet. Allow me to recap the stories for both your benefit and mine.

“THE FLUX”
-        Follows a black man who encounters a Korean woman whom has just discovered she can’t have children.
-        Location:  Washington, D.C.
-        Main Characters:  Sydney and Sung
-        Supporting Characters:  Chancey & Tawanda
-        Ending:  Sydney and his friends manage to cheer Sung up.  Sung realizes her calling; to mentor abused children.

“The Brink”
-        Follows a white female climatologist on location in the Alaskan arctic where she believe she encounters a mythical creature the Inuit natives call the Qalupalik.
-        Location:  Arctic Circle, Alaska
-        Main Characters:  Lauren and Brandon
-        Supporting Characters:  Kirima and the Qalupalik
-        Ending:  Lauren, having lost her expedition team in a storm, falls subject to what may be her own delusional encounter with the Qaluaplik, only to be rescued by Brandon.  The story is told years later by Lauren’s daughter to her own granddaughter.

“The Horn of Freedom”
-        Follows a Muslim police captain in Dearborn, Michigan as he thwarts the plans of a racist robber gaining him attention from a political strategist whom works to win the captain Dearborn’s next mayoral race.
-        Location:  Dearborn, Michigan
-        Main Characters:  Captain Kashir Mansur and Daneil J. Horn
-        Supporting Characters:  Samia Mansur, Rashida Mansur, Ryan Wooding, Sam Raimes
-        Ending:  After winning the mayoral race, Kashir is killed in front of his daugther, Rashida, by the racist robber he’d stopped the year before.  The story is a memory of Rashida’s whom is being inaugurated as the United States President.

“Longing on Las Olas”
-        Follows  two American girls of French and Greek heritage as they throw caution to the wind and take a last minute vacation from Chicago to sunny Fort Lauderdale where one of them starts a relationship with a Dominican male nurse from New Brunswick, NJ.
-        Location:  Las Olas, Fort Lauderdale, Florida
-        Main Characters:  Chloe and Dante
-        Supporting Characters:  Yanna and a Sixty-Something Tourist woman
-        Ending:  After overreacting to Dante’s need for privacy, Chloe learns Dante’s trip to Florida was to honor the loss of a young patient whom he could not save from cancer.  Dante and Chloe pick up where they left off when he pays a surprise visit to Chicago.

“Shadow Among Us”
-        Follows an Amish teenage girl during her Rumspringa in which she hitch-hikes across Pennsylvania to find her cousin whom has joined the “English.”
-        Location:  Pennsylvania
-        Main Characters:  Hannah and Mary
-        Supporting Characters:  Bernie, Francine, and Issac
-        Ending:  After finding her cousin, Mary, Hannah explains she is to be married and will not be leaving the Amish to join Mary.  Though heart-broken, Mary drives her back to the Amish where she is shunned.

“Twenty-Seventh Time”
-        Follows an eleven year old girl with an obsessive compulsive disorder whom is talked out of suicide by her friend whom is dying of cancer and befriends a yoga instructing mentor whom can relate to abuse she has suffered from her mother.
-        Location:  Alexandria, Virginia
-        Main Characters:  Olivia and Sung
-        Supporting Characters:  Ellie, Corrie, Kevin, Bernie, Sung’s Father
-        Ending:  After bonding with her new mentor-friend, Olivia is able to begin the long path to coping with her OCD.

In my next post, I’ll focus on the connections, potential connections and loose threads that will allow me to affix these pieces of scaffold together.

Cheers!

Greetings,

If you don't know me, I thank you for checking me out.  If you do know me, you'll know that this past March/April I was soliciting creative sentences from my facebook friends that I turned into short stories weekly.  The energy from that creative tango is fueling my next project I'm calling "The Grid".

You see, in all of the short stories I created during that time, I left a bit of a loose thread in each of them with the intent on weaving them all together in one bigger story reminiscent of movies like "Crash" or similar to the way Warner Bros. used to interlace many of their Looney Tunes shorts into movies like "The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie" or "Daffy Duck's Fantastic Island".

So whether you've read the short stories as my personal facebook friend or you've only just discovered me, I promise to take you on a very intimate journey as I create this novella from scratch before your eyes!  Follow my updates and see my train of thought in action as I weave these threads together and craft a rich and complex universe with memorable characters and situations that make you stop and think!

Cheers!
